Why Kristallnacht is Especially Significant in 2023

November 9th, 2023

As the world marks the eighty-fifth anniversary of Kristallnacht, the sound of glass shattering still rings in our ears.

The events of the past month have intoned history’s echoes, and the reverberations of centuries of hatred and violence continue to shake us, just as they sent ominous shockwaves across Germany and Europe on November 9, 1938. The ground feels unsteady beneath our feet even now, but we must stand firmly and with resolution to carry forward the work of remembrance and education.

3GDC accomplishes this mission by helping grandchildren of Holocaust survivors share their families’ direct testimony in order to personalize Americans’ understanding of that tragedy and its lessons. As we share these accounts of survival to the next generation, let us draw strength from the legacy of our grandparents to steady ourselves through difficult times. Let us honor the Holocaust’s victims and survivors by continuing to work toward making ‘Never Again’ an ethos and not merely a slogan.

With that, we are honored to share a story from 3G Robyn Miller-Tarnoff, whose grandmother, Mimi Hanflik, experienced Kristallnacht.
